The Transformative Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Parks with Jonathon Geels, Troyer Group

How can we overcome our fears, address necessary skepticism, and unlock the power of the next-generation technology ecosystem to enhance our shared public spaces? This session will explore the forefront of innovation, discussing how AI-driven solutions will optimize planning and visualization, and enhance visitor experiences, while also improving operational efficiency and resource management within parks and recreation. These tools will play a pivotal role in how cities and consultants shape a greener, smarter, and more beautiful world.

Artificial Intelligence in Bloom with Jonathon Geels, Troyer Group; Jordan Gathers, South Bend VPA; Kevin Nuppnau, Valpo Parks

Exploring the current and potential artificial intelligence (AI) applications within departmental operations, planning, and maintenance as well as interfaces with the public. Through a multipart discussion, this small panel of parks officials and consultants will discuss the flourishing landscape of AI applications across various segments of municipal parks departments and other civic entities. As AI continues to evolve, its integration across diverse sectors is reshaping workflows, enhancing efficiency, and fostering innovation.

  • Dr. John Crompton, University Distinguished Professor, Texas A&M University

    John L. Crompton holds the rank of University Distinguished Professor and is both a Regents Professor and a Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence at Texas A&M University. He received his basic training in England. His undergraduate work was in physical education and geography at Loughborough College. After teaching high school for a year, he attended the University of Illinois where he completed a M.S. degree in Recreation and Park Administration in 1968. In 1970, he earned another M.S. degree from Loughborough University majoring in Business Administration.

    In 1970, he joined Loughborough Recreation Planning Consultants as their first full-time employee. When he left as managing director in 1974, LRPC had developed into the largest consulting firm in the United Kingdom specializing in recreation and tourism, with a full-time staff of twenty-five, which was supplemented by a number of part-time associate consultants.

  • Leon Younger, PROS Consulting

    Leon has been the owner and founder of PROS Consulting since 1995. His expertise is in the development of parks and recreation system master plans, strategic plans, feasibility studies, business plans for revenue producing recreation and park facilities, and the development of financial and organizational management studies. Prior to the foundation of PROS Consulting, he held positions as Director of Parks and Recreation in Indianapolis, Indiana; Executive Director of Lake Metroparks in Lake County, Ohio (Cleveland vicinity); and Director of Parks and Recreation in Jackson County, Missouri (Kansas City), as well as the Parks and Recreation Director of Garden City, Kansas. In 1994, he received the National Recreation and Park Association's Distinguished Professional Award for his progressive and innovative thinking in management of public parks and recreation entities. As the President of PROS Consulting, Leon has worked with over 1,300 park and recreation agencies over a 26-year span that includes National Parks, State Parks, Park and Recreation Districts, Large and small cities and counties across the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Rwanda. Currently, Leon is serving on the Board of Directors for the City Parks Alliance, the only independent, nationwide membership organization solely dedicated to urban parks.

  • Jonathon Geels, The Troyer Group

    As principal at Troyer Group, a multidisciplinary landscape architecture and engineering firm, Jonathon has established a purpose-driven approach to every project with a distinctive commitment to people and experiences. As his role has expanded, Jonathon’s emphasis on adaptive and hyper-local practice provides leadership across disciplines to each of the firm’s regional offices. His design ethic and process seek to solve emergent problems by connecting people to new ideas through research and activism. He is a frequent public speaker, dovetailing his design approach by placing a priority on research, mentorship, and teaching. He has spoken nationally at the Conference on Landscape Architecture and internationally at the Sociology of Development Conference, as well as many special lectures, including at the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture Students for New Urbanism series, a plenary session for the Indiana Bicycle Summit, Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning Design Week and Alumni Symposium, as well as the keynote presentation for the Washington Chapter of ASLA’s Annual Meeting.
