President’s Award
Jim Basala
Jim has dedicated his life in service of providing quality parks for people. On paper, his full-time employment with Lake County Parks & Rec began in 1977, but just ask him and he’ll tell you all about how he started years earlier through a work-study program. Over the decades, he’s truly done it all: from mowing grass and fixing waterwheels to managing Deep River Waterpark and helping develop Bellaboo’s Children’s Play & Discovery Center. He’s donned costumes, made sure kids were having fun, taught students, tapped trees and boiled syrup. As CEO you’ll still find him wandering around weekend programs making sure staff are supported and people are having a good time. Because, to Jim, it’s all for and all about the people. And over this life of service, no doubt millions of people have benefitted from his dedication as they’ve enjoyed a visit to Lake County Parks.
